Baby Wrapping 101: How to Start Your Babywearing Journey
Congratulations on your first Little Frog wrap! You are at the beginning of a beautiful journey filled with closeness. With our guide, you will learn how to wear your baby safely and confidently from the very first days.
First Steps: Sizing and Preparation
Before placing your baby in the wrap, ensure the length is sufficient for both you and your partner. We recommend a "dry run" without the baby first—try the Front Wrap Cross Carry (FWCC). This is the most "fabric-hungry" carry and will best verify if the length works for both caregivers.
If the length is correct, you can remove the paper tags. Always remember the golden rule: every new wrap must be washed before its first use. This ensures that:
- The fibers settle into their proper structure.
- Any manufacturing residues are removed.
- The fabric becomes more pliable and easier to tighten.
Your product manual contains specific care instructions and illustrated guides for basic carries.
When to Start Learning?
There is no universal "start date." If the birth was uncomplicated and the baby is healthy with no medical contraindications, you can start wearing your newborn from day one.
Consider these factors:
- The Postpartum Period: This is a time for recovery. If your baby doesn't require constant holding, feel free to postpone learning for a few days or weeks until you feel rested.
- "Un-put-downable" Babies: Newborns often crave constant closeness. In these cases, a wrap is a lifesaver—it's much healthier for your spine and pelvis than carrying a baby in your arms for hours.
- Mom’s Readiness: Physical well-being is key. Ensure you feel stable and strong on your feet before you begin.
How to Learn: Manuals vs. Professionals
While manuals and online videos are great resources, nothing beats a hands-on session with a professional.
- Babywearing Consultants: Experts who tailor carries to your body type and baby’s needs. They use weighted "demo dolls" because a standard plush toy is too light to help you feel the real tension of the fabric.
- Personalized Guidance: A consultant will correct your posture and show you how to manage meters of fabric efficiently.
- Workshops: A great way to meet other parents and share the learning experience.
Key Safety Checkpoints
Proper wrapping ensures comfort for you and safety for your baby’s hips and spine. For beginners, we recommend the Kangaroo Carry or Front Wrap Cross Carry (FWCC).
- Proper Tightening: This is the key to success. The wrap should be snug enough to "stick" the baby to your body. This provides full support for the spine (a healthy C-curve) and prevents the baby's weight from straining your back.
- The "M-Position": The baby’s knees should be higher than their bottom, with legs in a physiological spread. This protects the hip joints.
- Carrying Height: The baby’s head should be "close enough to kiss." The top rail of the wrap should stabilize the neck, reaching the bottom of the baby’s earlobe.
- Airway Safety: The baby’s face must always be visible, ideally turned to the side, ensuring they can breathe freely.
Wrapping Isn't as Hard as it Looks!
Your first attempt won't be perfect, and that’s okay. Babies sense your tension and might fuss initially. We recommend practicing without the baby 3–4 times to build muscle memory and confidence in tightening the fabric.
Don't be discouraged! It’s a skill like riding a bike. If your Little Frog wrap contains bamboo or Tencel™, you’ll notice an extra softness that makes learning to tighten even easier from the very first try.
