Ring slings – quick, one-shouldered babywearing

In short: a ring sling is a single-layer woven wrap threaded through two rings, worn over one shoulder and ready in seconds. Choose it by the wearer's clothing size: S (1.7 m / 5.6 ft) for EU 36 and under, M (2.0 m / 6.6 ft) for EU 38–44, and L (2.3 m / 7.5 ft) from EU 46 upwards — size M is the most versatile. For a first ring sling we recommend 100% cotton; linen, Tencel and bamboo are ideal for summer. Newborns are carried on the front, tummy to tummy; older babies on the hip.

A ring sling is the fastest way to pick your baby up and still have both hands free. There is nothing to tie and nothing to prepare in advance: you thread the fabric through the rings, seat your baby and tighten the rails one by one. That is exactly why it suits short trips, the school run, a walk with the dog, or those stretches of the day when your baby wants up and down again every ten minutes.

A ring sling is single-layered, so the weight rests on one shoulder. For long walks and heavier children a woven wrap is usually more comfortable, since it spreads the load across both shoulders, the back and the hips. Plenty of parents keep both and switch depending on the outing.

From what age can a baby be carried in a ring sling?

In this respect a ring sling is no different from a standard woven wrap — what matters is the carry itself and your baby's position. A healthy, full-term baby can be carried from the first days of life, provided there are no medical contraindications and the mother feels well. Premature babies usually from around 2 kg (4.4 lb), always in consultation with their medical team.

A newborn is carried on the front in the tummy-to-tummy position: high on your chest, with a slight pelvic tuck, knees higher than the bottom, chin off the chest and the face always in view. An older baby who sits unassisted and has good head control can move to the hip — a position that lets them see the world while still leaning against you.

In both positions the same rules apply: the bottom rail properly turned, the fabric spread from knee to knee, and the rails tightened one section at a time rather than all at once.

What size ring sling should you choose?

Little Frog ring slings come in three sizes. The size follows the wearer's clothing size, not the baby's age or weight:

• Size S — 1.7 m (5.6 ft) — for petite builds, roughly EU 36 and under (UK 8, US 4) or men's EU 48 and under.
• Size M — 2.0 m (6.6 ft) — the most versatile choice, roughly EU 38–44 (UK 10–16, US 6–12) or men's EU 50–54.
• Size L — 2.3 m (7.5 ft) — for taller and larger builds, roughly EU 46 and above (UK 18+, US 14+) or men's EU 56 and above.

Which fabric should you choose?

For a first ring sling we recommend 100% cotton. Cotton is the most versatile option: it holds well, tightens predictably and forgives small mistakes while you are still working out how to seat the fabric in the rings.

Alongside cotton we offer blends:

• Linen — strong and highly supportive, with a cool hand. Ideal for summer and for heavier children.
• Tencel — silky and gliding, easy to tighten, pleasantly cool against the skin.
• Bamboo — soft and drapey, also with a cooling effect.
