Carrying the newborn in a baby sling or ergonomic carrier.

Carrying a newborn baby in a baby sling or infant baby carrier.

The first few days after birth are a time when many questions and doubts arise, and the newborn is one big mystery to its parents. The little one is already on the other side of the belly and the parents are getting to know him/her day by day, learning to recognise his/her needs and react accordingly.

So what does the infant need?

  • The need for autonomy

Autonomy is the ability to make decisions and act independently. The newborn does not yet have this ability, but has a natural tendency to develop it. Therefore, it is important not to restrict his movements, not to impose a day and night rhythm, not to interrupt his sleep and feeding. Let him express his needs and signals, and let us try to understand and respect them.

  • The need for stimulation

Stimulation of the baby's senses and mind. A newborn baby is curious about the world and wants to explore it. Therefore, it is important to provide him with a variety of stimuli that are adapted to his age and abilities. Let's play with the baby, talk to him, sing to him, read to him, show him the world. Remember, however, that a newborn baby gets tired quickly and needs time to rest and process information. Do not overload him with stimuli and observe his reactions.

  • Physiological needs

Physiological need is the satisfaction of basic vital functions such as breathing, eating, drinking, excretion, body temperature. The newborn is completely dependent on the caregivers for this and relies on their care and attention. It is therefore important to regularly check that the baby is dry, clean, full, hydrated, warm but not overheated. Feed the baby on demand, do not limit the time and frequency of feeds, do not introduce artificial additives unless there is a medical indication. Take care of the baby's hygiene, change his nappies, clean his navel, bathe him gently and rarely.

  • The need for closeness

The newborn needs closeness a lot. For nine months, he was attached to his mother, hearing her heartbeat and her voice. Now it needs time to get used to the new world, to the fact that it is already a separate entity.
When the baby feels anxious - it cries. In this way he shows that he wants to be close to his mother, to feel her smell, her rocking, her touch. Just as he had in his prenatal days, when he felt safe. This closeness can and should also be given by the father - so as to build a bond from the very first moments. Newborns and babies should be able to feel their own closeness.

Carrying in a baby sling or baby carrier from the first days of life

Babywearing is the perfect answer to the need for closeness. We give our baby what she needs - closeness - and we gain hands free, freedom and mobility.

From when is it safe to carry in a sling or baby carrier?

In fact, from the first moments of his or her life - as soon as the parents feel confident and ready. At the beginning, tying a sling may seem complicated and difficult, but after the first attempts, it turns out that tightening a sling or tying a kangaroo or a flat knot is not so scary ;)

Babywearing is not so difficult.

Fastening a baby carrier is much easier. However, with small children, care should be taken to ensure that the carrier has been properly adjusted in height and width, and once the baby is in it, it should be properly tightened so that it supports the spine all the way around. It's a good idea to make sure that the carrier is properly adjusted to the right length.

Choosing a baby sling for a newborn

Baby sling carriers vary in thickness, type of fabric (weaving method), and composition.
For the beginning of babywearing, we recommend choosing a thinner sling, up to 240gsm, preferably 100% cotton or cotton with bamboo/lyocell, striped (broken-twill weave), or jacquard, such as Cube pattern.
Such a sling is soft from the first wash, works well and is easier to pull on.
And most importantly, such a sling can be bought at a good price.

Best tying of baby sling for newborn?

The best tying for a newborn baby will be the kangaroo or Front Wrap Cross Carry. In these tying, the position of the carried baby in the sling will be the most physiological.

How to choose a baby carrier for newborn?

An ergonomic baby carrier for non-sitting babies should meet a few basic conditions.
It should be adjustable in height and width so that it adapts well to the baby's height, soft and wrapping, and preferably have an additional fastening under the baby's legs - so that the fabric does not stretch on the baby's back, allowing it to assume a natural position.

What is the right position of a baby in a baby carrier, and what is the correct position of a baby in a baby sling?

We should always carry our baby in an upright position, tummy to tummy, placed on our chest, at the level of the baby's forehead. The baby's spine is then well wrapped and supported with soft fabric. The head, which the baby is not yet holding on its own, should be supported by the sling or the top panel of the carrier, more or less up to the level of the baby's ear.
The baby's spine is arranged in the letter C (the so-called kyphosis), the legs are visited to the sides (spread out, but not widely, so as not to form twine), and properly bent.Remember that a baby's spine should be wrapped in a soft cloth, so that the baby's head is well supported. Memorise that the sling or carrier is well tightened! The baby should be "glued" to us. Always follow product instruction!
